PHARA Community Services Launches “Pathways to Success” Scholarship to Support Future Personal Support Workers

PHARA Community Services is proud to announce the launch of a new student scholarship designed to support the next generation of health care professionals in North Bay and surrounding communities. The Supporting Personal Support Workers (PSW) Pathway to Success Scholarship will provide financial assistance to students enrolled in a registered Personal Support Worker program in the Nipissing area.

Through this new initiative, two eligible Ontario students will each receive a $500 scholarship to help offset post-secondary education expenses. Funds may be used toward tuition, textbooks, technology, transportation, or other education-related costs.

The Pathways to Success Scholarship reflects PHARA’s ongoing commitment to strengthening community-based care and investing in the people who deliver it.

“PHARA believes that by investing in the future of PSW students, we can help to make a difference in local health care and in services to our community,” said Mike Van der Vlist, CEO of PHARA Community Services. “We are a non-profit that relies on the amazing skills and dedication that PSW professionals bring to the clients we serve every day of the year. This is our way of fostering the next generation of care providers and hoping to inspire them to serve North Bay and surrounding areas.”

PSWs play a critical role in delivering front-line care. They assist individuals with mobility, daily living activities, personal care, and community participation, enabling clients to maintain independence and dignity. As demand for health and community services continues to grow, recruiting and retaining skilled PSWs remains a priority across Ontario.

By supporting students early in their training, PHARA aims to reduce financial barriers and encourage graduates to consider building their careers locally. The scholarship also aligns with PHARA’s broader organizational focus on education, professional development, and workforce sustainability.

Van der Vlist noted that the scholarship builds naturally on PHARA’s existing commitment to staff development.

“We offer our staff members opportunities internally for training, so this seemed like a natural extension to a group of people we are very interested in having know about PHARA,” he said. “It helps them, it helps the community, and we hope that this will help PHARA.”

PHARA Community Services has long relied on the expertise and compassion of PSWs to deliver high-quality programs and supports to individuals with physical disabilities and mobility challenges. The organization recognizes that investing in students today contributes directly to stronger care systems tomorrow.

The scholarship is now open. Applicants must meet the outlined criteria, deadlines, eligibility requirements, and complete the application process as described on PHARA’s website at: https://www.phara.org/psw-pathway-to-success-scholarship.

Students are encouraged to apply and community members are invited to share information about the scholarship with those pursuing careers in personal support work. All applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2026.
