PHARA and Near North Crime Stoppers Encourage Residents to Prepare for Fall With Top Safety Tips

Now is the perfect time to make sure that your outdoor light bulbs are working, BBQ’s are secured, and hedges are trimmed for clear line of sight to help protect your home and reduce opportunities for criminals.

PHARA Community Services and Near North Crime Stoppers are reminding residents that fall is a good time to take a fresh look at the safety and security of their homes, properties and vehicles. Seasonal maintenance provides an opportunity to identify potential security concerns while completing routine tasks around the home.

“When it comes to crime prevention, taking a few minutes to look at your home and vehicle each season can make a real difference,” said Kim Jones, Executive Director of Near North Crime Stoppers. “Being proactive can help reduce opportunities for theft, while also making sure your property is ready for the changing season.”

Some of the top simple fall safety measures include:

  • Check doors and windows: Make sure locks, latches and other hardware are working properly. Keep doors and windows secured, including when you are home.

  • Review outdoor lighting: Replace burnt-out bulbs and consider motion-activated lighting around entrances, walkways and other areas that may become less visible as daylight decreases.

  • Maintain landscaping: Trim trees and shrubs that could obstruct views or provide places for someone to hide. Keep walkways, yards and outdoor areas clear of leaves, branches and other debris.

  • Secure outdoor items: Put away or properly secure ladders, tools, bicycles, patio furniture, BBQs and other equipment that could be stolen or used to access a home.

  • Check outbuildings and property boundaries: Make sure garages, sheds, gates and fences close and lock securely.

  • Test safety and security equipment: Check security systems, cameras, alarms, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries where necessary.

  • Plan for time away: If you are travelling, ask a trusted neighbour to collect mail and consider using timers for interior lights to give the appearance that someone is home.

"Thanks to our partnership with Crime Stoppers, it made sense for us to share with the community a message of safety that we are talking about with our staff, tenants, and clients," said Mike Van der Vlist, CEO, PHARA Community Services. “At PHARA, safety is part of our everyday approach, and these simple steps are things we encourage people to consider throughout the year. We hope this serves as a reminder that everyone can take practical steps to help protect themselves, their loved ones and their community.”

Vehicles should also be part of a seasonal safety check. Always lock vehicle doors and close windows, and park in well-lit areas whenever possible. Remove cash, gift cards, electronics, bags, tools and other valuables from view. Items left in plain sight can create an opportunity for theft, even if they have little monetary value.

If you see suspicious activity or have information about criminal activity, contact police. Information can also be provided anonymously through Near North Crime Stoppers.
