PHARA Community Services Announces Recipients of PSW Pathway to Success Scholarship
PHARA Community Services is pleased to announce that Matthew Smith and Kiran Kuriakose have been selected as the recipients of the organization's 2026 PSW Pathway to Success Scholarship, an initiative designed to support individuals pursuing a career as a Personal Support Worker (PSW).
The scholarship program attracted dozens of applications from aspiring health care professionals across the region. Following an extensive review process, Smith and Kuriakose emerged as the top candidates based on their submissions, commitment to community service, and dreams of supporting others.
"We received a wonderful collection of entries from people who are clearly passionate about becoming a PSW and helping their community," said Mike Van der Vlist, CEO of PHARA Community Services. "Our two winners received top marks in our ranking and stood out amongst some close competition."
PSW’s play a vital role in Ontario's health care system, providing essential assistance that helps people maintain their independence, dignity, and quality of life. As demand for community-based health care services continues to grow, attracting and supporting the next generation of PSWs has become increasingly important.
The PHARA PSW Pathway to Success Scholarship was created to help reduce barriers for individuals entering the profession while encouraging more people to consider careers in health care and community support services.
"I am just very thankful to PHARA Community Services for this PSW Pathway to Success Scholarship," said Matthew Smith, one of the two scholarship recipients.
The selection committee noted the high quality of applications received throughout the process. Many applicants demonstrated a strong desire to make a positive impact in the lives of others and highlighted the importance of compassionate care within their communities.
"Both winners went the extra mile with their submissions, although with such an excellent group of people, we would be excited to hear from them in the future about the possibility to apply and join our PHARA team," said Van der Vlist. "Our hope is that we can inspire people who are in the North Bay area to consider being a PSW along with attract new talent to our community. It's not just a job, it's a career opportunity."
PHARA Community Services continues to invest in initiatives that strengthen the local health care workforce and promote independence for everyone. Through a variety of housing, health care, and community support programs, the organization works to help individuals live safely, independently, and with dignity.
The PSW Pathway to Success Scholarship is one of several efforts aimed at building a strong future workforce while ensuring residents have access to the services they need both today and in the years ahead.
