PHARA Community Services Reflects on a Year of Impact, Inclusion, and Community Leadership
As the year draws to a close, PHARA Community Services is reflecting on a year defined by meaningful impact, strong partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to independence, inclusion, and community wellbeing across North Bay and surrounding communities.
Throughout the past year, PHARA continued to deliver essential services that support people of all abilities to live independently and with dignity.
“As a recognized leader in independent living, affordable housing, and health care, PHARA’s work reached hundreds of individuals and families, helping to remove physical, social, and systemic barriers that can limit participation in everyday life,” said Mike Van der Vlist, CEO of PHARA Community Services. “Advocacy for independence and housing remained a core focus, reinforcing PHARA’s belief that safe, accessible housing, and supportive services are fundamental to strong, inclusive communities.”
At the heart of PHARA’s success is their dedicated and compassionate team. Staff members consistently went above and beyond to meet the diverse needs of clients, demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and a deep sense of purpose in their work. This commitment to excellence was once again recognized nationally, as PHARA Community Services was officially certified as a Great Place to Work® for the third consecutive year. In addition, PHARA was named one of the Best Workplaces™ in Government & Social Services for 2025, an honour awarded by Great Place to Work® Canada. These recognitions reflect not only a positive workplace culture, but also the organization’s strong values, leadership, and respect for employees.
PHARA’s impact is further strengthened by a passionate group of volunteers and Board members who generously share their time, expertise, and lived experience. Their governance and commitment play a vital role in shaping the organization’s strategic direction and ensuring that PHARA continues to respond effectively to the evolving needs of the community.
Collaboration remained a key theme throughout the year. PHARA partnered with Near North Crime Stoppers to help raise awareness about anonymous crime reporting tools, reinforcing the shared goal of creating safer communities for everyone. By promoting access to trusted reporting options such as the Near North Crime Stoppers website at nearnorthcrimestoppers.com, the partnership emphasized that community safety is a collective responsibility.
Innovation and capacity building were also priorities. In partnership with the Nipissing Wellness Ontario Health Team, PHARA helped deliver a series of free AI workshops designed specifically for non-profit organizations. These sessions provided practical knowledge and tools to help organizations operate more efficiently, communicate more effectively, and better serve their communities in an increasingly digital world.
“We had a strong showing for the education sessions from a wide range of organizations across the region. It showed both the need for education, as well an interest in improving services,” said Van der Vlist.
PHARA also continued its long-standing partnership with YES Employment Services, working together to promote inclusive workplaces that value and hire people of all abilities. This collaboration supports both employers and job seekers, advancing economic participation and reinforcing the importance of diversity and accessibility in the workforce.
As PHARA looks ahead to the coming year, the organization remains focused on strengthening services, deepening partnerships, and advocating for welcoming communities where everyone belongs.
“The successes of the past year are a testament to what can be achieved when dedicated professionals, volunteers, partners, and community members work together with a shared vision,” said Van der Vlist. “In times like these, when things are challenging for so many, it is through unity that we can make a difference.”
PHARA Community Services extends its sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to this year’s achievements and looks forward to continuing this important work in the year ahead.
